The Wonderful Things...
September 09, 2008
I was making 'Honey Joys' tonight and it just made all those wonderful cooking memories of childhood come flooding back:
Like 'Western Star' butter:
Do you still use that wonderful trustworthy farmhouse 'Western Star' because your Mum did? I do!
And I used the very last bit of my 'Nundle Honey' up:
This was a gift from Kerry when I was teaching for her. The honey is made from bees on her farm. It was the most delicious honey and every time we used it Georgia said, "Tell me where it came from again Mummy". So I think that the 'Nundle Honey' will be part of her lovely six year old childhood memories for some time.
What childhood cooking memories do you have? Do you still use products because your Mum did?

P.S. Here's Melinda's recipe for Honey Joys (thanks Mel, they worked!!!!)
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter, 1 tablespoon honey, and 1 tablespoon sugar over low heat. Mix in 3 cups of cornflakes and spoon into patty papers. Bake in a moderate oven for 5 minutes.
Funny, but I find myself using things my Nanny and Gubby used - not so much my Mum! This post did bring back lots of lovely memories though - and it made me think of my Mum (two states away!) and long for home!

I have never heard of Honey Joys, but I guarantee me and the grandkids will make these this weekend. I love the pincushions too.

Hey Leanne! Ooooohh! Honey Jumbles are the BEST!! While most of my cooking ingredients differ from Mum's shopping list, 9 times out of 10 I'll buy Bundaberg sugar, because we lived in Bundy for a few years and I remember Mum buying huge sacks of raw sugar straight from one of the mills and storing it in a plastic garbage bin. The smell of raw sugar still makes me think of growing up in Bundy and helping Mum make all sorts of goodies, like pikelets, jamdrops and banana cake! Thanks for the walk down memory lane!! I also buy Western Star, but because my grandmother did. I must also buy Pure Icing Sugar - Never the Icing mix.
She was the best baker. There were always the yummiest homemade cookies, cakes, desserts, pies & sausage rolls at her house. My favourite was her cream cupcakes - she'd decorate them 6 different ways!

When I was four, my maternal grandma moved down from Brisbane to live with us, and I still have wonderful memories of standing beside her on a chair and helping makes scrumptious goodies such as gingernut cookies or lemon butter.
Poor Mum unfortunately seemed to be somewhat jinxed in the kitchen and though she tried her best, my memories there include the pot of peas that became welded to the hot plate when they boiled dry, and the steamed pudding (it also boiled dry) that's golden syrup caught fire (picture mum walking as fast as possible outside with pot extended at arms length and beautiful blue flames shooting out the top), not to mention the incendiary stewed plums.
However she was also the mum who stayed up till about two o'clock in the morning the night before my birthday party, making the most fantabulous crepe paper sunflower treat bags and hats for all my friends, who at a moment's notice came up with an exquisite field mouse costume for me in fifth grade, and who like all our Mums was generally there for everything we needed (quite often before we knew we needed it) 24/7.
Mind you it was also Mum who told me, when I was in 4th grade that chippolata was Italian for chips. Guessed who was asked to answer that question the next day at school? Guess that's where I get my warped sense of humour from as well.
Mum's yay. Best thing since or before sliced bread!!!!

Honey Joys are great!! My childhood memory - home made waffles, icecream and caramel syrup. My mum and a friend went in shares in a waffle machine and used to have a big day making waffles together and we've have a freezer full of them to last the winter and have warm waffles for dessert!! Chocolate Crackles and Honey Joys used to go together in my house!!! Yours look great! :)

Creative in the kitchen too *vbg* As for me, I make my Mums 'Dark Secret Chocolate cake'. The recipe came from a 1968 Bournville Cocoa tin, she still has the original tin & just refills it.
